How & When Memorial Day Started?

By 1870, the remains of about 300,000 Union dead had been assimilated into 73 national cemeteries, located on major battlefields and thus mainly in the south.

By 1871, some northern states made “Decoration Day” an official state holiday, and by 1890, almost every northern state followed the manual.

There were no standard events for the ceremony, but they were usually organized by the Grand Army of the Women’s Relief Corps of the Republicans (GAR), which by now had millions of registered members. The most famous national cemeteries are in Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.

In 1874, the first official celebration of Confederate Memorial Day was celebrated as a public holiday following the proclamation by the legislature of Georgia.

By 1880s, grand army (GAR) introduced a guide introducing specific procedures, speeches, poems and verses for locals to use in planning local events. On that day, people gathered themselves to decorate the tombs and marched to the local cemetery, an institution prepared a month in advance to assure that there was none were missed. The parade was followed by a simple and polite graveside service consisting of veteran prayers, short speeches, and music … and finally a rifle salute.

After 1971’s American civil war United states current government announce it official federal holiday. After that this day celebrate as Memorial Day. Memorial Day, gradually becoming known as Decoration Day, was originally awarded to those lost while fighting in the Civil War.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs admits that about 25 locations have claimed the origins of the holiday. On May 26, 1966, Lyndon b. Johnson named Waterloo as the “official” birthplace of the Memorial Day holiday, signing the proclamation as the President of New York.
